Wouldn't it be nice to chat with anybody without having to come up with things to say? One of the nicest ladies I ever met was a school teacher. I was chatting with her on a film set once because we were using her daughter in a commercial. This lady was (and I repeat) one of the nicest people I have ever met. I think we chatted for about 30 minutes and then I never saw her again. Thirty minutes. I seriously thought that I could trust this lady with all my deepest darkest secrets. That I could call her up one day and ask her to go for coffee and she’d say yes. How could this lady make such an impression on me in such a short amount of time? Well, she had mastered the two keys you need to be a perfect small talker. These two things are revealed in my book and once you know them, everything gets so much easier. My name is Lana and I am a relationship and self-care blogger. Before I started a blog, I was a seriously introverted university student trying to get through film school without having to small-talk with my classmates at lunch. Little did I know back then, the film industry is all about networking and creating relationships with people you barely know. Once I started actually working in film, I was forced into learning how to small talk and how to get along with people. I was able to do this by observing others and stealing their techniques. People like that lovely high school teacher became my role models, I needed to do what they were doing. After years of observation, I realized that all master small-talkers have a few things in common but the biggest things are the two keys that were shown to me so elegantly by that school teacher. Once I had mastered those, no small talk conversation was a nightmare anymore. In fact, I started to enjoy them. My book will show you: The two keys you need to master small talk, and n 1. Gail. Hannah. Bridget. Lizzy. Flavia. Each of them has a shameful secret, and each is about to find out that she is not alone... Gail, a prominent Boston judge, keeps receiving letters from her husband's latest girlfriend, while her husband, a theology professor, claims he's nine-months sober from sex with grad students. Hannah, a homemaker, catches her husband having sex with a male prostitute in a public restroom. Bridget, a psychiatric nurse at a state hospital, is sure she has a loving, doting spouse, until she learns that he is addicted to chat rooms and match-making websites. Lizzy, a high school teacher, is married to a porn addict, who is withdrawn and uninterested in sex with her. Flavia was working at the Boston Public library when someone brought her an article that stated her husband had been arrested for groping a teenage girl on the subway. He must face court, and Flavia must decide if she wants to stay with him. Finally, Kathryn, the young psychologist running the group, has as much at stake as all of the others. As the women share never-before-uttered secrets and bond over painful truths, they work on coming to terms with their husbands' addictions and developing healthy boundaries for themselves. Meanwhile, their outside lives become more and more intertwined, until, finally, a series of events forces each woman to face her own denial, betrayal, and uncertain future head-on. From author Sylvia True comes The Wednesday Group, a captivating, moving novel about friendship, marriage, and the bonds that connect us all. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Susan Bennett. Nadine Cohodas's biography of the passionate, talented and difficult, but ultimately lovable, Nina Simone is an object lesson in American life. With thorough interviews and research, much new material and information that has never before come to light, Nadine tells the story of Eunice Wayman, born in Tryon NC in 1933, with a stunning musical talent that was spotted early by family and friends. Trained as a classical pianist through the charitable auspices of a local white woman who paid for her lessons and made sure she had access to a first-rate piano teacher, Eunice became Nina Simone only after the devastating disappointment of not being accepted at the highly exclusive Curtis Institute of Music. She had planned to be a classical musician, and much of her life and career were colored by this fact -- as was her music, making her attack on a typical jazz tune uniquely heady and virtuosic. In the summer of 1954, in order to make a living, Eunice took a job playing the piano at a bar in Atlantic City, and before long she was not just playing but singing and was becoming Nina Simone, the marquis name she picked for these first gigs. The rest is history, or becomes so with Nadine's ministrations. We watch the exciting rise of Nina's discovery of herself as a singer (by 1959 she had a hit with "I Love You Porgy" and had sung Town Hall, was well received and on her way), her unique and challenging relationship with her audiences (she would "shush"; them angrily -- as a classically trained musician, she didn't believe in cabaret chat ), her involvement in and contributions to the Civil Rights Movement (through songs such as her seminal "Mississippi Goddam" and friendships with James Baldwin, Lorraine Hainsbury and Langston Hughes), her marriage and brief family contentment with the police detective Andy Stroud, with whom she had her daughter Lisa. Alongside these threads runs a darker one: Nina's increasing and sometimes baffling 1. Language: English. Narrator: Lisa Renee Pitts. Getting learners in an EFL environment to speak meaningfully in a foreign language is notoriously difficult. Innovations in educational technology enable teachers and students to facilitate teaching and learning speaking skills. This study reports on a descriptive study of attitudes of students and teachers, who have no chat-experience, about the potential use of CMC (via text &voice-based chat) as an instructional resource to facilitate their speaking ability. The study also tries to explore some similarities and differences between student and teacher computer use and opinions of students and teachers towards the use of voice &text-based chat with intercultural partners in language instruction. It also reports experienced chat-use teachers' perceptions in respect to advantages and disadvantages of using CMC tools. Findings revealed that both sets of EFL teachers and students were positive in support of use of CMC in support of speaking instruction, although teacher responses indicated anticipation of some problems in implementing classroom CMC. The study involved three groups of respondents: students, teachers without experience in CMC, international teachers experienced in CMC.
