Rodolphe Salis

Louis Rodolphe Salis (29 May 1851 20 March 1897) was the creator, host, owner and soul of the famous cabaret of Le Chat Noir ("The Black Cat"). Son of a distiller in Châtellerault, young Rodolphe Salis came to Paris in 1872, after leaving the regiment of his military service. He moved into the Hotel de Rome, rue de Seine in the Latin Quarter. It melts "the school or vibrating Iriso Chicago-subversive", to give importance to his artistic group and especially to inspire confidence in publishers religious images. He made indeed to live, paths cross and other religious objects he painted in series with friends.

One of the greatest novels to have come from the 19th century, a realistic, gritty exposure of the lives, loves, intrigue and rivalry that existed in the literary world of London. The art form and culture of writing is becoming a business, expanding rapidly, and profit is more important than integrity of purpose. In the search for a wider readership, editors and publishers look to the poorer educated classes believing that shorter, slighter commercial treatments will sell and thus erudite writers with serious ideas and 'urgent messages for the world' have their work devalued. 'Instead of Chat I should call it Chit-Chat...it would sell like hot cakes. On the same principle...if the Tatler were changed to Tittle-Tattle its circulation would be trebled...An admirable idea! Tittle-Tattle -a magnificent title; the very thing to catch the multitude.' The downward intellectual spiral is of course contrasted by the progress of lightweight, jobbing writers able to turn their pens, with ease, to any task and supply copy with trite, popular appeal. Gissing knew his subject well, and his characterisation of the facile, unscrupulous Milvain, the rancorous Yule, the paranoid and impoverished Reardon all have the note of authenticity, as do the women used and abused by them in their struggle for success and the publication of their work. Truly one of the books from which we should learn, monumental in the telling, the story is an engrossing tale, describing a shabby Pyrrhic victory, at the expense of all those with a reasoning mind, of self-advertisement over artistic endeavour in an ongoing war- of what happens when pen meets penury. 1. An Innocent in Newfoundland

David McFadden travels around Newfoundland. Who knows which was most charmed In An Innocent in Ireland (1995) and An Innocent in Scotland (1999), poet and traveller David McFadden let the spirit of the country - and his own interests - guide his rambles. He has now done the same in Newfoundland. Zigzagging across the province in his rented car, he charts an erratic course, admiring lawn sculpture (in his opinion a new local art), visiting fellow poets and publishers, wandering at dusk among the Viking mounds at L'Anse aux Meadows, rooming with a Salvation Army family in a distant outport (and discovering a family tragedy), hanging on in a stiff wind to watch birds nesting on a cliff face, and enjoying the social life in countless bars and restaurants. It soon becomes clear that McFadden's love of a good chat is shared widely by the people he meets in Newfoundland and he is wise enough to let them tell their own stories. For, as ever, his interest is in the heart of a place - and not just its scenery. Alert, somewhat eccentric, always ready to amuse and be amused, David McFadden is an ideal travelling companion.

A fully realized portrait of one woman's life in all its complexity, by the National Book Award-winning author An ordinary life-its sharp pains and unexpected joys, its bursts of clarity and moments of confusion-lived by an ordinary woman: this is the subject of Someone, Alice McDermott's extraordinary return, seven years after the publication of After This. Scattered recollections-of childhood, adolescence, motherhood, old age-come together in this transformative narrative, stitched into a vibrant whole by McDermott's deft, lyrical voice. Our first glimpse of Marie is as a child: a girl in glasses waiting on a Brooklyn stoop for her beloved father to come home from work. A seemingly innocuous encounter with a young woman named Pegeen sets the bittersweet tone of this remarkable novel. Pegeen describes herself as an 'amadan,' a fool; indeed, soon after her chat with Marie, Pegeen tumbles down her own basement stairs. The magic of McDermott's novel lies in how it reveals us all as fools for this or that, in one way or another. Marie's first heartbreak and her eventual marriage; her brother's brief stint as a Catholic priest, subsequent loss of faith, and eventual breakdown; the Second World War; her parents' deaths; the births and lives of Marie's children; the changing world of her Irish-American enclave in Brooklyn-McDermott sketches all of it with sympathy and insight. This is a novel that speaks of life as it is daily lived; a crowning achievement by one of the finest American writers at work today. A Publishers Weekly Best Fiction Book of the Year A Kirkus Reviews Best Fiction Book of 2013 A New York Times Notable Book of 2013 A Washington Post Notable Fiction Book of 2013 An NPR Best Book of 2013
