In this hilarious tour de chat, Marian Babson goes beyond the many bubbling mysteries she has written to add an element of comic fantasy to the menace of murder. Someone is trying to kill leading British Shakespearean actor, husband, father, ladies´ man, and soon-to-be knight of the realm Winstanley Fortescue. The actor, rehearsing his starring role in the forthcoming play Serpent in the Heather, is conked on the head backstage. He falls off a ladder and lands on the resident pest-control officer, Montmorency D. Mousa (otherwise known as Monty), the company cat. When Fortescue comes to, he finds, to his horror, that he has become trapped in Monty´s body while the cat, now installed in the heroic frame of the distinguished thespian, has been carted off to the intensive-care unit reserved for humans. How this actor, who has played to the crowned heads of Europe, suffers such indignities as being forced to use a litter box and having to evade his unknown enemy makes this most recent work tops among all the author´s delightful novels. 1. In this first novel of E.A. Allen´s Montclaire Mysteries Series, murder mixes with international intrigue to make a deliciously evil soup. The year is 1903, and there´s a murder at Le Chat Noir, a cabaret in Montmartre. No ordinary murder. Above Marie Collot´s lifeless body stands no ordinary man - Edward VII, King of England. Called in as the French Republic´s official investigator, Gerard de Montclaire navigates a complex web of greed, hatred, jealousy, and intrigue to find a ruthless master spy, who will stop at nothing to prevent an historic treaty between England and France. In the end, however, the key to the crime may be as simple as love gone awry. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Guy Bethell. To Catch a Thief is David Dodge´s most famous novel, and rightly so. Alfred Hitchcock firmly cinched its place in the annals of crime fiction by adapting it into an Academy Award winning film starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. The story centers on John Robie, American expatriate and skilled gymnast, who once-upon-a-time was Le Chat, the famous and elusive cat burglar who worked the South of France. The legend of Le Chat grew with each crime. Following the war, Robie retires to a quiet life in France and vows to leave his past behind. His retirement is shattered when a copy-cat burglar commits a string of robberies that puts the police on Le Chat´s trail again. Robie must catch the phony Le Chat before the police catch him. 1. With her reputation endangered, her bank account on the verge of extinction, and her career at risk of going up in flames, Violet is desperate. A fascinating story about a slave plantation in the middle of nowhere, completely cut off from the modern world, where slavery has been practiced since the American Civil War. Avery Pine, an American college student, writes his final exam, followed by a ´´big blowout party´´. After being dumped by his online girlfriend, whom he was on his way to visit for the first time, he goes into a blues bar to drown his sorrows, chats up an attractive girl, blacks out, and wakes up half dead in a swamp. Miraculously, he finds his way out of the swamp, only to be captured by one of the slavers and forced into slavery. A great adventure story with fascinating overtones regarding the philosophical outlook of slave owners that also explores how generations of slaves remain positive in the face of extreme cruelty and deprivation. Can Avery rescue them and himself? Or will he fail? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Travis Leonard. Audio sample: http://samples.audible.de/bk/acx0/117815/bk_acx0_117815_sample.mp3. One of the greatest novels to have come from the 19th century, a realistic, gritty exposure of the lives, loves, intrigue and rivalry that existed in the literary world of London. The art form and culture of writing is becoming a business, expanding rapidly, and profit is more important than integrity of purpose. In the search for a wider readership, editors and publishers look to the poorer educated classes believing that shorter, slighter commercial treatments will sell and thus erudite writers with serious ideas and ´urgent messages for the world´ have their work devalued. ´Instead of Chat I should call it Chit-Chat...it would sell like hot cakes. On the same principle...if the Tatler were changed to Tittle-Tattle its circulation would be trebled...An admirable idea! Tittle-Tattle -a magnificent title; the very thing to catch the multitude.´ The downward intellectual spiral is of course contrasted by the progress of lightweight, jobbing writers able to turn their pens, with ease, to any task and supply copy with trite, popular appeal. Gissing knew his subject well, and his characterisation of the facile, unscrupulous Milvain, the rancorous Yule, the paranoid and impoverished Reardon all have the note of authenticity, as do the women used and abused by them in their struggle for success and the publication of their work. Truly one of the books from which we should learn, monumental in the telling, the story is an engrossing tale, describing a shabby Pyrrhic victory, at the expense of all those with a reasoning mind, of self-advertisement over artistic endeavour in an ongoing war- of what happens when pen meets penury. 1. It seemed to be a cold case like any other. So much so that Stone and Dehan hadn’t even considered reviewing it - until private investigator Karl Baxter requested a copy of the police file. Then, Stone got curious. Why did a second-rate PI in the Bronx want to look into the case of a low-life petty criminal found tied to a chair in his apartment, beaten, and shot through the heart? And that question led to other questions, like whose was the second pool of blood on the floor? If there was a second victim, where was the body? Unfortunately, a chat with Baxter only raises more questions that threaten to drive Stone crazy: Who is the mysterious Tamara Gunthersen? And what was the gig she did for the even more mysterious Geronimo dos Santos, back in 2015? At every turn the questions get deeper, and the women more tempting - and more dangerous. Until the strain on Stone and Dehan’s partnership threatens to make it snap. Then, Stone will be on his own.... 1. Language: English. Narrator: Steve Carlson.
