When I began writing this book, it was my intent to focus on the military men and women of our country. They are definitely heroes to all of us. In gathering stories, I found there are many ordinary people that are also heroes. This inspired me to expand my vision to include short stories from people of all ages and walks of life who have made a difference. This is the first book, and it starts a series of ´´Chit Chat Café´´ worldwide short stories. After listening to this book, if you can turn to someone and say, ´´You should listen to this book´´, my objective will be met. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Gerry Bradley. Here is the award winning, surprisingly angry, but slightly reluctant comedian in his third solo show, all about his little tantrums and snatches of dinner party conversation.Miles sheds the tweed and some of his natural snobbery in order to examine why, despite his outward sweetness and serenity, he repeatedly falls victim to sudden flashes of appalling anger. You´ll hear stories, convoluted explanations, misunderstood theories, and half-remembered snatches of postprandial hilarity. 1. Language: English. Some pictures tell a story, and a certain old print acquired by a collector proves to have a very dark tale to relate, and in a most uncanny fashion. A classic tale from the master of the English ghost story M. R. James. Originally written to read by the fireside to the members of the Chit Chat Club of Cambridge, this story was first published in James´s first collection The Ghost Stories of an Antiquary in 1904. This telling comes with a short afterword which provides some notes and commentary on the text. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Jim Moon. One of the greatest novels to have come from the 19th century, a realistic, gritty exposure of the lives, loves, intrigue and rivalry that existed in the literary world of London. The art form and culture of writing is becoming a business, expanding rapidly, and profit is more important than integrity of purpose. In the search for a wider readership, editors and publishers look to the poorer educated classes believing that shorter, slighter commercial treatments will sell and thus erudite writers with serious ideas and ´urgent messages for the world´ have their work devalued. ´Instead of Chat I should call it Chit-Chat...it would sell like hot cakes. On the same principle...if the Tatler were changed to Tittle-Tattle its circulation would be trebled...An admirable idea! Tittle-Tattle -a magnificent title; the very thing to catch the multitude.´ The downward intellectual spiral is of course contrasted by the progress of lightweight, jobbing writers able to turn their pens, with ease, to any task and supply copy with trite, popular appeal. Gissing knew his subject well, and his characterisation of the facile, unscrupulous Milvain, the rancorous Yule, the paranoid and impoverished Reardon all have the note of authenticity, as do the women used and abused by them in their struggle for success and the publication of their work. Truly one of the books from which we should learn, monumental in the telling, the story is an engrossing tale, describing a shabby Pyrrhic victory, at the expense of all those with a reasoning mind, of self-advertisement over artistic endeavour in an ongoing war- of what happens when pen meets penury. 1.
