In this work, an e-learning application is developed that provides many services which are training courses, online assessment, e-library, chat and news. These services are developed to reduce the cost of education, make it available to a wide range of students, and to increase the interaction between the teacher and the students. This application is designed as a web site with ASP.net under Csharp and Structured Query Language (SQL) server as programming tools. The application makes a student takes a training course, tests his knowledge and sees the results directly without need to wait. This provides faster and accurate results, paperless environment and makes learning at anytime, anywhere. One of the important challenges that facing the application is the interest of the students in it, also the availability of technology equipment could restrict using it. This work contributes in the transformation efforts in the online appearance of Iraqi universities from the informational to the interactive type of e-services.
This book presents lectures given at the 8th International Workshop on Spoken Dialog Systems. As agents evolve in terms of their ability to carry on a dialog with users, several qualities are emerging as essential components of a successful system. Users do not carry on long conversations on only one topic-they tend to switch between several topics. Thus the authors are observing the emergence of multi-domain systems that enable users to seamlessly hop from one domain to another. The systems have become active social partners. Accordingly, work on social dialog has become crucial to active and engaging human-robot/agent interaction.These new systems call for a coherent framework that guides their actions as chatbots and conversational agents. Human-Robot/Agent assessment mechanisms naturally lend themselves to this task. As these systems increasingly assist humans in a multitude of tasks, the ethics of their existence, their design and their interaction with users are becoming crucial issues. This book discusses the essential players and features involved, such as chat-based agents, multi-domain dialog systems, human-robot interaction, social dialog policy, and advanced dialog system architectures.
Developmental Education is an approach to education in school that aims at promoting children's cultural development and their abilities to participate autonomously and well-informed in the cultural practices of their community. From the point of view of Cultural-historical Activity theory (CHAT), a play-based curriculum has been developed over the past decades for primary school, which presents activity contexts for pupils in the classroom that create learning and teaching opportunities for helping pupils with appropriating cultural knowledge, skills, and moral understandings in meaningful ways. The approach is implemented in numerous Dutch primary schools classrooms with the explicit intention to support the learning of both pupils and teachers. The book focuses especially on education of young children (4 - 8 years old) in primary school and presents the underpinning concepts of this approach, and chapters on examples of good practices in a variety of subject matter areas, such as literacy (vocabulary acquisition, reading, writing), mathematics, and arts. Successful implementation of Developmental Education in the classroom strongly depends on dynamic assessment and continuous observations of young pupils' development. Strategies for implementation of both the teaching practices and assessment strategies are discussed in detail in the book.
A chatbot is expected to be capable of supporting a cohesive and coherent conversation and be knowledgeable, which makes it one of the most complex intelligent systems being designed nowadays. Designers have to learn to combine intuitive, explainable language understanding and reasoning approaches with high-performance statistical and deep learning technologies. Today, there are two popular paradigms for chatbot construction:1. Build a bot platform with universal NLP and ML capabilities so that a bot developer for a particular enterprise, not being an expert, can populate it with training data,2. Accumulate a huge set of training dialogue data, feed it to a deep learning network and expect the trained chatbot to automatically learn "how to chat".Although these two approaches are reported to imitate some intelligent dialogues, both of them are unsuitable for enterprise chatbots, being unreliable and too brittle.The latter approach is based on a belief that some learning miracle will happen and a chatbot will start functioning without a thorough feature and domain engineering by an expert and interpretable dialogue management algorithms.Enterprise high-performance chatbots with extensive domain knowledge require a mix of statistical, inductive, deep machine learning and learning from the web, syntactic, semantic and discourse NLP, ontology-based reasoning and a state machine to control a dialogue. This book will provide a comprehensive source of algorithms and architectures for building chatbots for various domains based on the recent trends in computational linguistics and machine learning. This book argues that it may be useful to conceptualise student learning in undergraduate education as a dialectical change process of identity transformation which is mediated by cultural tools and social relationships. It analyses the experiences of students learning in undergraduate education throughout a four year degree course in a Sri Lankan university using an analytic framework informed by Engeström s version of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). The book specifically explored the question of how do students regulate their learning in relation to the contextual demands and their own valued outcomes? The analysis of students experiences highlights how the students learning is affected by tensions or dilemmas arising from the collective purpose and the institutional assessment practices and how the students and their lecturers achieved expansive learning at the systemic and individual levels. The findings are synthesised into a model for understanding student learning in undergraduate education and the implications for policy, practice and further research are discussed.
